Premier Protein: Review and Giveaway!

We all have those crazy mornings or days where we’re just tight on time and don’t eat properly. Sometimes we’re headed outdoors for a big day and need something convenient that will keep us fueled while we’re out on the trail. For over a decade Premier Protein‘s shakes and bars have given people the boost they need. In fact, their mission is to “give you the energy to get the most out of every day — now.” Their products are jam-packed full of protein to help you stay energized, build muscle, satisfy hunger and more.

The Campsite had a chance to give their bars and shakes a try. Here’s what we thought:

Bars

Now I have tried a lot of energy bars, and even if the taste is OK, I’m often turned off by the texture. I was pleasantly surprised with Premier Protein’s Chocolate Peanut Butter, Double Chocolate Crunch and Yogurt Peanut Crunch bars. These have a smooth texture, and they don’t leave that chalky after-feeling you encounter with some bars. They also tasted really good, particularly the Double Chocolate Crunch. This was key for me when I was munching on one first thing in the morning. I was also happy to see that they are high in iron (20-30% daily value) as this is something that active, outdoorsy folks need to make sure they’re replenishing often.

Premier Protein says that their products are free from extra calories, fat and sugar. For the most part they are, but I’d be mindful that these snacks are to be consumed as meal replacements or when you need a good, solid boost. Thankfully, this seems to be something they promote as well. With 4 or more grams of saturated fats and 8 or more grams of sugar, they still pack enough calories, fat and sugar that you should only be consuming them when you’re also engaged in an active and overall healthy routine. This is my general rule of thumb when it comes to any meal replacements and energy drinks/bars.

Shakes

I have some good news and some bad news about the shakes from Premier Protein. I’m a big fan of nutrition in liquid form. My husband knows that I thrive off of smoothies, fresh juices and health shakes. Occasionally I buy some energy shakes for the times I need them most. I have a pretty sensitive palate for shakes that’ll do the job but also ones I can really enjoy.

When I tried Premier Protein’s chocolate and vanilla shakes, I had some mixed feelings. The texture couldn’t be better. Like the bars, it went down without that chalky feeling you sometimes get afterwards. The chocolate was tasty, and though it had a slightly tart aftertaste, I could still enjoy it to the last drop. But, I could barely get the vanilla shake down. I definitely couldn’t finish it. It was much too sweet for me, and tasted more like sugar than vanilla, if that makes sense.

Overall, I am impressed with the nutritional content in the shakes. They contain 24 vitamins and minerals, so they will surely give you a boost. Be mindful that to keep their sugar content low (1g), they use some artificial sweeteners, like sucralose. The shakes also contain many ingredients I can barely pronounce, which is usually another sign that these are products to consume in moderation.

    I just housed a package of beef jerky after my morning coffee! I usually find myself hungry around 10:30 or 11:00am, then again mid-afternoon. Protein definitely helps stave off some of the hunger pangs until I can get my evening CrossFit workout in. Thanks for running this giveaway, Meghan!

    I definitely find myself needing a boost mid-afternoon! Especially when I have a PM workout planned, I know I’ll need the extra fuel to power through.
