It's 1:30am and the alarm sounds. Snuggling my sleeping bag closely around my neck, I'm not ready to move. For a few moments, I secretly wish I heard the pitter-patter of rain on the tent. But, eventually someone starts moving and eventually the whole crew is ready for this alpine start. The mountain awaits us and so do my contact lenses. Bet you didn't expect that one.

By: Jessica Smith | With hiking season upon us, chances are you've recently invested in a new toy or two to make your trails a little happier. While breaking in your new boots or getting used to a shiny set of poles is an important part of the early season, making sure your faithful trail dog is just as well prepared is also essential. For every stride you take your dog is likely taking about four. What is a moderate hike for you may be strenuous for your pet. With the right gear, both you and your canine companion will have a more enjoyable trek during the summer months to come.

The ideas of people being guided up Everest or ascending the mountain using fixed ropes and jumars have long been controversial in the world of alpinism, but I don't think the general public sees it this way. A lot of people simply swallow any Everest news completely whole without stopping to question what is happening to the world's highest peak. They have no reason to if they are not passionately opinionated about the more philosophical or even moral aspects of climbing - what it really entails, what defines "pure" alpinism and what the climbing style one uses to achieve the summit says about the climber.

How many pairs of shoes do you have in your closet? Imagine you could have one shoe that looks great, keeps you dry and won't disintegrate when you venture off the beaten path. Thanks to FORSAKE, we're one step closer to having some ideal, all-weather, all-condition footwear. Boston footwear start-up Forsake is debuting its line of all-weather sneakers on crowd-funding site Kickstarter.com in a 40-day campaign to raise over $200,000 for mass production (as of today, they have 17 days to go).

I have never been able to put my finger on it, that influence of a cozy backcountry lodge, but upon entering that door I immediately began to relax and return to my roots. Reading by candlelight on a cushy, window-side settee, I immediately zoned out and into my book, free from the distractions of life near the phone, email, people. The rest of the world was an 11-kilometre ski away.

I haven't yet reviewed or recommended any movies here on The Campsite, but the other day my sister recommended a movie to me that really touched me in a deep way. I had never heard of The Big Year, but I was up for trying it out even though it was about birding, a sport I previously had about as much interest in as watching paint dry. With a cast of Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black, I expected the movie to be a predictable comedy full of misunderstandings and comedic rivalry. It was, but it was also so much more.

But, more and more, people are proving that the next adventure is really just learning to take the kiddies along and experiencing life through their eyes. Not yet being a parent myself, I have turned to the web to see what information I can find. And the more I looked for adventurous parenting ideas, the more resources I found.

News emerged from CBC today that the British Columbia government is set to approve the Jumbo Glacier Resort.

This long-standing controversy has been on the table for two decades, and as CBC reports, no previous government was willing to sign off on the deal - "until now." The development project, worth $1 billion, would be built at the base of Jumbo Mountain and the Jumbo Glacier, 55 kilometres west of Invermere, B.C.
